Course Subjects

Strong Reading Foundations

Evidence-Based Reading Instruction (EBRI) helps students strengthen the four essential components of reading: alphabetics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Diagnostic reading assessments identify each learner’s level and guide targeted instruction based on individual strengths and needs.

Instruction is direct, engaging, and relevant to adult learners, using real-world topics and ongoing formative assessments to monitor progress and ensure effective skill development for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students.

English Language Arts

ELA 100: Build Communication & Digital Skills

This course strengthens foundational English skills in grammar, reading, and writing. Students learn to identify main ideas, retell key details, ask and answer questions, and analyze how individuals, events, and ideas develop within a text.

Instruction also builds the ability to use text features—such as captions, headings, glossaries, and digital menus—to locate information efficiently.

By the end of the course, students gain confidence using Google Docs, educational software, and basic internet navigation to support learning and communication.

Mathematics

MAT 100: Everyday Math for Life & Work

This course builds number sense and strengthens skills in addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division using standard methods and real-life applications.

Students develop accuracy and fluency in computation while learning to use the GED-approved TI-30XS calculator.

Upon completion, students demonstrate growth in computation and applied math skills and are prepared to transition to the next level of math instruction.

TESTIMONIALS

What Our Students Say

I came to ALPS seeking to strengthen my math skills. Having been primarily homeschooled, I recognized the need to build a stronger foundation in order to move forward. My goal was to pass the GED math test—something I had attempted several times before.

Starting at the foundational level, I committed myself to the process. Through consistent effort and guidance, I steadily progressed and ultimately achieved my goal of passing the GED math exam. That accomplishment opened the door to higher education and career growth. I enrolled in college to pursue a degree in Computer Information Systems, and I am proud to be nearing graduation this May. I have since returned to ALPS as a Data Entry & Assessment Proctor Specialist, supporting students at the beginning of their journeys.

My experience is a reminder that progress requires persistence. Taking the first step was not easy—I had to confront my fear of failure—but I learned that even small, challenging steps forward are still meaningful progress. I also discovered that I was not alone. Many students come to ALPS facing similar obstacles, and with the support of dedicated staff, those challenges can be transformed into success stories with continued effort.
